A 13.72 acre farm protected from development

WERNERSVILLE --- A 13.72 acre farm in North Heidelberg Township will become

the second farm protected from development by Adopt An Acre Inc. and the first

farm preserved under a Memorandum of Understanding with the County of Berks

which places the county on the deed of easement as a co-grantee. The MOU, which

was adopted in 2009, guarantees that the County will defend the conservation

easement in perpetuity if ever challenged. No county funds will be used to

purchase the easement. The Ludwigs will receive $1,250 per acre from Adopt An

Acre Inc. A permanent deed restriction will be placed on the property which

ensures it will remain in agricultural use.

Owned by George and Faye Ludwig, this farm is adjacent to two farms preserved by

the Berks County Agricultural Land Preservation Board and the Commonwealth of

Pennsylvania. These two farms, owned by the Hook family, total more than 90

our first conservation easement

We are excited to announce that our non-profit organization has partnered with the Berks Agricultural Land Preservation Board in purchasing our first conservation easement. Settlement for this historic milestone occurred Friday, October 1, 2010. A perpetual easement protecting 16.6 acres in Upper Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, was placed on the deed with Adopt An Acre Inc. joining with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the County of Berks as easement holders. We thank the farm’s owners, Dean and Brenda Tice, for committing their land to future generations for agricultural use. The farm is currently being used for pasture and raising hay.

Adopt An Acre Inc. President Dan Brennan called this a momentous step for the non-profit as we move forward with the mission to save farmland. “Our group’s budget is small, so partnering with the County allowed us to invest in farmland preservation that we could not have done on our own. The Tice’s were referred to us for assistance by BCALPB and we were able to turn their application around prmptly. As a result, this farm will remain in agriculture forever.”

Adopt An Acre Inc. was organized in 2004 and has been raising funds for farmland preservation for the past six years. Our non-profit organization can accept donated conservation easements, partner with other preservation groups, or purchase easements on smaller acreages.
